Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt at drawing the structural components of ethnic identity with the purpose of further operationalizing and respectively researching the ethnic identity as a communal psychic phenomenon. The structural components of ethnic identity that are discussed are applicable to a multicultural context. They are differentiated in three groups – cognitive (self-categorization, social group self-esteem, and awareness of shared culture), emotional (commitment and attachment, evaluation and appreciation of own ethnic belonging, personal commitment to what happens to own ethnic group, vulnerability or sensibility to ethnic prejudice) and social-group components (shared attitudes towards own and other ethnic groups, loyalty to own ethnic group and its members, need of intergenerational transmission and succession of ethnic culture).
