Hermeneutical Analysis of the Old Bulgarian Service for St. Kliment of Ohrid

Summary/Abstract: The article is the first attempt to present a hermeneutical analysis of the original Old Bulgarian Service for St. Kliment of Ohrid. Each hymnographic unit of the service is analyzed independently and in relation to the entire composition. A new identification is proposed for two hymns: the troparia, mode 4, in the vespers and the glory sticheron, mode 4, at the end of the service. Comparison shows that the heirmoi and the theotokia in St. Kliment’s canon are identical to those in the Common canon for a Hierarch. In the course of the analysis the complete text of the office for St. Kliment is published.
