Summary/Abstract: n the light of new developments related to the financial crisis in the EU, this essay is an attempt to critically evaluate any possible hegemonic role of the European Union in the international system. This paper investigates if it is still possible for the EU to rise as a new hegenomony or rather the prospect of a stable multipolar system is more plausible. The main aim is to argue that the European Union is following a low trajectory in four different dimensions; political/institutional, ideological\normative, military and economic. In the first section the problem will be characterized theoretically. The next section discusses the many faces of a possible hegemony and it is followed by a more specific analysis of the four dimensions in the case of the European Union.
