The Road in the Model of Sanctity

Summary/Abstract: Set against the background of the symbolism of the road which has ancient roots, the article unfolds the meaning of the road in Christianity which build the image of a saint. Stress is laid on the meanings of the road as life (walking one's life) and movement (taking different roads as chosen by the free will). With respect to movement, two types of saints are distinguished: missionaries and motionless hermits for whom the external settling in one place is the symbol of invariability. By interpretation of passages of the Bible are adduced the other meanings of the road as predestination, salvation, perfection, connection,goal, means etc. This article is the first study of the question on the basis of material from the Old Bulgarian literature.
