Summary/Abstract: The article is concerned with the usage of the terms colonization, assimilation, settlement, annexation, etc. in modern Anglo-American historiography in relation to the Russian colonization of the late 16th – late 18th century. The semantic content of these terms and the authenticity of their translations into English are analyzed. The article demonstrates that the usage of this or that term with respect to the territorial expansion of Russia defines the ideological position of the author using it.
