Summary/Abstract: Objectives. An increasing limitation of physical activity starting from the early childhood becomes a real risk factor for health, and raising awareness for this aspect could urge children and teenagers to return to an active lifestyle and to adopt more healthy habits. Material and methods. By using questionnaire method, we collected and carefully analyzed sufficient data regarding pupils' participation in physical education classes, their involvement in extra-curricular sportive activities and the intensity of the expended physical effort. During the study, 1501 respondents (837 – girls and 664 - boys) of secondary and high schools from the rural areas in the Republic of Moldova were interviewed. Results. Analysis and evaluation of research results revealed that 19.3% of the surveyed pupils did not practice any form of physical activity in the past seven days, preferring other types of activities, 17.6% practiced only once a week, 12.1% - 2 days per week, 7.2% - 4 times a week and only 20.3% opted for daily exercising. During the last 12 months, 48.8% of the pupils were not involved in extra-curricular sportive activities, and 89,8% declared that they usually do sport only 2 hours per week, during the physical education classes. Conclusions. There is a tendency among the pupils to adopt a passive sedentary lifestyle. Combating this risk factor for our society is possible by promoting sport as a mean of education, which should be understood not as a temporary activity, but as a series of continuous actions that take place throughout the life course. The dynamic skills are very effective if they are developed and exercised in early childhood.
