Summary/Abstract: The paper is devoted to the little-studied issue of revival and institutional development of Soviet Byzantine studies in the 1940–1950s. The research is based on archival materials and studies of the group on the history of Byzantium supervised by E.A. Kosminskii that was established by the Academy of Sciences in 1943 and reorganized into the sector of Byzantine studies in 1955. The ways of self-organization of historians of Byzantium, characteristics of the organizational structures created by them and scholarly periodicals (“Vizantiiskii Vremennik” (Annals of Byzantium) and “Vizantiiskii Sbornik” (Byzantine Collection)) are discussed. The influence of the ideological campaigns of 1947–1949 on the development of journals and the community of Byzantinists on the whole is revealed. Special attention is paid to the problem of group management. The process of institutionalization is considered as one of the first approaches to the problem of Soviet Byzantine studies. Thus, the problem of its further investigation is raised.
