Summary/Abstract: If modern art has usually been defined by means of a specific relationship with rules and a predisposition to develop new modes of expression, modes that do not always take into account an objective, exterior reality as a model for the work of art, profusion as its distinctive trait has formed the object of a lot less critical attention. While, as this essay argues, creativity and originality might cease to seem exclusively modern when one compares European and non-European art, the remarkable abundance and diversity that epitomizes art throughout the last century could provide a key element for understanding it.
