Summary/Abstract: A year before the Party ban of different literary groups took place in 1932, diverse and competing ideas of literary esthetics and politics had been still part of the Soviet literary life. The article shows this situation on the example of the literary questionnaire – What kind of writer do we need of 1931. Various writers, including shock-workers, answered detailed questions of the journal Na literaturnom postu concerning several aspects of their work and the evalutaion of their role in the society. The questionnaire represents rather low level of norms-buildingprocess in 1931. It was still the time when suppervising the process of activity was more important than its result. Yet it shows that different areas of literary process, including the life of the Soviet writer, became gradually codified. It all changed in 1932, soon after the questionnaire had been published, the Party Decree subsequently brought a new concept of Soviet literature, i.e. a single esthetic doctrine of the socialist realism together with the institutionalization and professionalization of literature.
