Cooper Еngravingsin the Archbishop Pjetër Bogdani´s Work Cuneus Prophetarum (1685)

Summary/Abstract: Cuneus Prophetarum is the first original work of the Albanian literature. It is written in prose but also contains some original poetry works - songs of ten Sibylas written in Alba-nian and in Latin. The book is illustrated with many copper engravings. The images of Sibyllas are engraved and double names are assigned to them. The first name is the tradi-tional and the second is a derivate from the name of a Balkan nation or of a Balkan place: Sibilla Delfica, or Hasnjana, Sibilla Kumea or Prisr (eniana), Sibilla Libika or Scod (ren-sis), Sibila Persica or Bul(gara), Sibila Elespontica or Ser(va), Sibila Frigia or Scop(iensis), Sibila Tiburtina or Alex(iensis), Sibila Cumana or Ser(va), Sibila Samia or Sad(rimensis), Sibila Eritrea or Cos(soviensis).The art of engraving seems to be a favorite art of the Balkan people during the 16-th, 17-th and even the 18-th centuries. The illustrated books published by Božidar and Vicenco Vuković, Jakov Kraykov, Philip Stanislavov, Pavel Riter Vitezović, later – Zacha-rija Orfelin and Christophorus Zhefarovič, have been very popular among South Slavs and among Albanians as well. Even one of the printed books of the franciscan monk Petar Bogdan Bakšič, Archibishop of Sofia,was decorated with pictures of the coats of arms of the Bulgarian kingdom and of the Archbishop of Sofia.
