Summary/Abstract: One of metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni’s constant concerns in the new diocese of Chişinău and Hotin was organizing the Theological Seminar from Chişinău. Being convinced of support for his initiative from the Sankt Petersburg Saint Synod, the metropolitan had already issued on the 30th September 1813 a decree which set the basis for its establishment. 10 pupils had been enrolled by the Seminar’s opening day – the 31st January 1813 –, 5 of them being from clergy families. The Seminar’s study program provided several compulsory subjects: logic, rhetoric, philosophy, religion, history, geography and mathematics. The Romanian, Russian, Greek and Latin languages were taught as well; French and German being facultative. The project elaborated by metropolitan Gavriil stipulated, among others, that the „Moldovan” language had a priority role because was the language in which the future clergy had to officiate the divine service. Each seminar class had 22 hours: 12 hours in the preparation classes and 10 in the „grammatical” ones. Then followed Greek with 20 hours, Russian and Latin (wit 18 hours in each class), and mathematics with only 10 hours.
