The invited to the Kingdom. The poor in the Gospel of Luke and their choices

Summary/Abstract: In the Gospel of Luke, the poor are the recipient of Jesus’ teachings and participants of the Kingdom of God. From the beginning of his public activities, Teacher of Nazareth presents Himself as the one who came to preach the Good News to the poor Luke 4, 18. Being poor is an attitude, which should be pursued to, as it qualifies a person to participate in the Kingdom of God (Luke 14, 21). The greatest difficulty in the way of poverty is a wealth of material, which should serve humanity, be a means, and not a target (Luke 18, 23). All kind of excessive attachment is also an obstacle to the achievement of poverty. Luke presents two patterns of poverty: one is Lazarus (Luke 16, 20–10) and the other the widow (Luke 21, 1–4). The image of the poor in the Gospel of Luke can be described on the basis of their characteristic: the poor is totally dependent on God, is aware that he has no own power, so he gives himself and his life into the hands of the Almighty.
