“Senior” - fashionable English semantic borrowing of contemporary Polish

Summary/Abstract: In the article the authors look at the history of the Latin borrowing “senior” in the Polish language to show in this context the functioning of the word in contemporary texts in a new, broader sense as ‘an elderly person, elderly man’. This neologism, created in order to reinterpret reality, connotes mainly the merits (not defects) associated with advanced age, that is wisdom and experience (stereotypically attributed to the elderly) as well as features not attributed to old age until now: being active, sociable and outgoing or physical and mental fitness. “Senior” as ‘an elderly person’ is an already established word in the Polish language. Proof of this are its characteristics (confirmed in the material collected and presented by the authors), such as the high frequency of use, wide text and social extension, activity as the basis for formative and semantic derivation.
