Different Theoretical Approaches to the Global Civil Society Concept

Summary/Abstract: This paper critically reviews the different theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of global civil society. It is a way to formulate the respective meta- analytic level and more precisely defines the general ideational space of global civil society discourse. The primary analytical intention is to identify specific conceptual dimension of relations between civil society and the globalization process. Accordingly, the work explores the composition of global civil society, the current institutions, organizations and practices of global civil society, and problems of global citizenship associated with issues of inclusion and exclusion. The article concludes by discussing the emancipatory potential of global civil society.
