Summary/Abstract: The objective of the article is to present the most important conclusions resulting from the carried out empirical studies on the impact of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) on activities of Polish enterprises. These studies aim at filling up the gap concerning lack of analyses of potential and real possibilities to use FOSS in the economic practice, including private enterprises. The general conclusion from the carried out studies is as follows: despite the fact that FOSS is used by Polish enterprises relatively broadly, only few of them are aware of the fact that they deal just with this type of software. The use of Free and Open Source Software affects improvement of efficacy of functioning of all groups of economic entities singled out by the number of employees, first of all such, in which there is operating a separated IT unit and there takes place a broad use of computers in the production and managerial processes.
