Summary/Abstract: The existing statistical documentation on foreign trade only provides reliable data with regard to the volume of external trade on a nationwide level. Regional recording of foreign trade is not fully possible because of difficulties in the recording of regional imports. From “export declarations” it is possible exactly to determine not only the value and quantity of goods exported but also the republic or autonomous province in which the goods exported were produced. However, it is very difficult to determine what quantities of goods individual republics and autonomous provinces have imported despite the fact that import declarations (which are — as in the case of exports — the only official documents on the basis of which statistical data are collected and processed) must also register the importing republic or province. It should be noted that at the moment of import it is often impossible to establish with certainty to which republic the goods will go, since the importer cannot always determine in advance the party which will buy the imported goods, especially when industrial materials and consumer goods are involved.
