Summary/Abstract: This article reviews from the middle of 19th–21st centuries, the development of visual anthropology and the peculiarities of its methodology. The problem of the relationship between theory and methodology in visual anthropology is important for understanding how visual images are used to produce ethnographic knowledge. On the basis of research methodology in visual anthropology, the paper analyzes the development of visual anthropology. The questions posed by the author are the following. What was the development of visual anthropology from the middle of 19th–21st centuries? How did methodology of visual anthropology change during two centuries? The answers to these questions are sought by analyzing the development of visual anthropology.
