Summary/Abstract: The development of the economy as a whole and improved business conditions created by the Economic Reform (1965) resulted, inter alia, in a faster expansion of crafts in 1968—1972. In that period crafts recorded the following growth rates (in both socialist and private sectors): production 6.2 per cent, number of employed 2.3 per cent, and labor productivity 4.3 per cent. The development of crafts lagged in intensity behind the pace of growth of the economy as a whole, especially industry, and behind the rise in demand for artisan products and services. This was due to the general conditions of economic and social development. In the period under consideration the rapid increase in industrial production of consumer goods has a restrictive effect on development possibilities for certain artisan products. In addition, difficulties in the supply of raw materials and semi-manufactures also had a negative bearing on the development of crafts, However, the rapid rise in the production of consumer goods, maintenance and repair of residential buildings, and growing requirements for building crafts and other artisan services, resulted in a faster development of service crafts.
