Uniting chord features in 1980s pop and rock-music

Summary/Abstract: This article is dedicated to searching of chorded trends in pop and rock music of the 1980’s. Chords in the works of various bands and artists are reviewed. The author makes an attempt to a common stylistic feature that identified unifying trend of the time period and which dominates the style differences. Methodology. The methodology of this studying consists of composition, harmonic, modal-acoustic tone and texture analyses that helps to explore the quality of musical compositions. The comparative analysis helps to identify the similarities and differences between the musical qualities in creativity of various artists and to see the evolution of sound techniques in a certain time period. Scientific Novelty. The scientific novelty of this work is to study areas of pop and rock music, which have not been studied by the musicology professional before. The author properly analyses the methods of harmonic music of the 1980s, which gives an opportunity to describe the «musical symbols» of this period. Conclusions. The features of the harmonies and accords demonstrate us the unique sound of pop and rock music of the 1980s, its difference from other periods of the of mass music. This example can be applied to any other style of pop and rock music.
