Summary/Abstract: In the article the views of one of the greatest early Christian preachers on the role of women in marriage and the family are portrayed. In this work the views of Chrysostom are discussed, which distinguishes him among other Church fathers. In the first part of the article the cultural context of the doctrine of the Bishop of Constantinople is shown. It depids how the role of women in the Greco Roman antiquity culture, as well as in Judaism and the doctrine of Paul of Tarsus was considered. In the second part Chrysostomos point of view on the woman as a wife and mother is depicted. In the third part the relationship between woman and man is discussed. The aim of this article is to show the peculiarity of St. John Chrysostom’s views on the role of women in the Christian family. This peculiarity is that the role of the wife and the mother is appreciated and that the woman is seen as responsible for the education of children and that she is actively involved in shaping the Christian character of the family.
