Summary/Abstract: The more overt concern with the cultural dimensions of international communication has been reflected in the fact that science, technology and business are becoming global activities. The present paper aims at discussing aspects related to notions such as language, culture, dimensions of communication, cultural variation, the convergence and divergence of cultures, which shape the modern professional communication. Culture is presented as a set of shared mental representations, which characterizes any social group differentiating it from other groups. The concept of national culture is presented as appropriate to understand cultural influences in global communication. Modern communication competence depends on the culture, the context, the relations between the interactants and their goals, the specific messages that are used to accomplish those goals.
