Summary/Abstract: The National Maritime Union (NMU) succeeded the organization Bulgarian National Maritime Accord which existed from 1920 to 1945 and propagated ideas of Bulgaria’s accelerated maritime development, of bringing up the youth and the people in a spirit of attachment to the sea and the professions connected with it; defence of the water frontiers of the country and utilization of the economic advantages of the sea and river outlets. In the new social and political conditions after 1944 the National Maritime Union in essence continued this active work of public utility in compliance with the peculiarities of the time. To a certain extent the sea programme of the National Maritime Union may be regarded also as a maritime programme of the Fatherland Front, but as a whole the executive power proved as inactive with regard to the problems of the country’s sea development as in the 20s and 30s. After 1947 the NMU was forcibly attached to other heterogeneous organizations and gradually disintegrated and was closed. By this an end was put to the organized maritime social movement in this country, created in 1920 and in existence until 1947.
