Chasing Away the Devils

Summary/Abstract: The sixteen-century Four Gospels known as Priest Rale Gospels from the Church Historical and Archival Institute at the Bulgarian Patriarchate (CHAI 571) has been restored sometime between the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century. Its restorer or binder (or both), who could be Priest Rale himself or a person unknown to us, has reused in his work a small+ piece of paper on which a pen-and-ink drawing of a demoniac creature was partially preserved.As putting in the image in the manuscript seems intentional, it is interesting to speculate on both the nature of the image and the probable dialogue between it and the readers of the book.
