Summary/Abstract: Over the next decade, the UK has learned significant lessons in the field of crisis and conflict prevention, in particular about the importance of avoiding recurring conflicts in fragile states that often find themselves in a vicious circle of violence and underdevelopment. As a result, the UK revised its investment priorities in order to focus on fragile and conflict-affected states and strengthened interdepartmental coordination – particularly between DFID and the Ministry of Defence (MOD) – to focus on the links between security and development. Conflicts have a destructive effect on years of development efforts and on the overall security of a country or region. Development is favoured by trade and, therefore, by the free movement of goods and people, which requires a certain level of security
