Summary/Abstract: Leonid Leonov is the writer who pays much attention to the language of his works. The author’s worry about the language is apparent in the narrator’s commentaries on the characters’ speech. It manifests in rich synonymy, usage of all possible suffix and prefix forms of verbs, rich choice of words and phrases replacing verbs of speaking. The replacers perform several functions – signal different typical stages of conversation, show the speaker’s state of mind, inform about the reactions of the interlocutor on what was said: his or her approval or disapproval, discontent, wish of avoiding something, defending or even of unburdening his or her mind. The analysis of Leonov’s fiction exhibits the author’s regard to aural aspect of his characters. The narrator frequently informs about the tone and voice used in uttering one or another phrase. The peculiarities of a speaker’s voice are conveyed through various sound associations and are often expressed through similes, metaphors and oxymoron. The language of the commentary corresponds to the type of the dialogue, situation, character’s disposition, his or her state of mind, and as a result, this is included into the system of means of describing characters.
