Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to semiotic investigation of a relevant image in the creativity of the Danish director Lars von Trier – the image of water and water area. The majority of works by the director became material for the analysis; special attention was paid to the film “Breaking the Waves”. A set of meanings, connected with the image of water and water area, is explored on the basis of books on philosophy and mythology. Trier expresses these meanings through a circle of concrete motifs (repeated micro-themes): rain, a bridge, an alien, who arrived from behind the sea, death because of water (eschatological motifs), the archetype of the Great Mother, returning into a mother’s bosom. The director also uses audiovisual effects, created with the help of water and water area. This image participates in action of mechanisms, which attract attention of both an intellectual and an ordinary spectator to the films by Trier.
