Summary/Abstract: This essay studies gender violence in Italy from a historical perspective. In comparing the situation with the past, the aim is to establish what has not changed, what has remained fixed within a strong stereotype and what has changed in terms of mentality, customs and laws. Although the Italian delay in the acknowledgement of gender violence as a crime against the person remained unchanged until 1996, feminist struggles in the 1970s heralded the winds of change and challenged the self-perception of woman as restricted to the politics of the individual and the private domain. An important change that led to a great transformation in the symbolic meaning of gender violence was reliant on the imagination of men. The importance of this phenomenon in contemporary Italian society shows the significant the role of institutions that are still not fully able to face gender violence, on the one hand, and, on the other, the need to build a new culture and a solid education for future generations
