Summary/Abstract: This essay argues that gender as an analytical tool enhances our understanding of security. A critical gender analytical framework reveals underlying male-biased structures of violence and domination, which create and reproduce insecurities at the individual level that disproportionally affect women. This essay shows that both security and insecurity are gendered and are experienced differently by men and women. It does so by analysing how the concept of gender widens our understanding of security, going beyond the military sector. It also deepens it, moving the reference object from the state to the individual, advancing, thus, a more inclusive ontology. The essay shows that positivist accounts of security fail to give the security realm the in depth understating that it needs, leaving many insecurities invisible and unaddressed.
