Summary/Abstract: The following article deals with the phenomenon of urban gardening with a specific focus on Germany. Part I defines and categorizes the main forms of non-economically motivated gardening in urban public space, works out its core attributes and shows its historical background. Part II indicates how culture of a given historical period affects green areas' shape. It also clarifies how urban gardening and present political, social and ecological discourses are correlated. The summary enumerates the main findings and gives an outlook on possible developments of urban gardening.
