Summary/Abstract: Josip Broz Tito visited Eastern Serbia from 20 to 22 September 1969. The visit took place amid frequent conflicts of the republican leaderships, criticism of the Federal Executive Council, profound economic problems and national tensions. During the visit Tito focused on the realization of the Bor mining and smelting complex and the construction of hydroelectric power dam system Đerdap which was a joint venture between Yugoslavia and Rumania. Josip Broz Tito used his visit to Eastern Serbia to send several messages. He supported the demands of the Croatian and Slovene leadership that the federal government would stop investments from 1970 and that Đerdap 2 would not be built. Although he was aware of the numerous economic problems (primarily the illiquidity of the economy), opposing interests of the republics and strong disintegration processes in the country, in his public addresses he played these issues down. He insisted on preserving the unity of the country placing most his hopes in the communists and the working class convinced they were above the national conflicts and a barrier to all efforts that would jeopardize the Yugoslav socialist state. He also addressed foreign policy issues, focusing on improving relations with the USSR which had deteriorated because of the Soviet intervention in Czechoslovakia and on the strengthening of the non-aligned movement.
