Summary/Abstract: According to the predictions over 50% of the world’s population will have internet access in 2016, while the number of social media users on a global level increases at a rate of 100 million per month. On average, the time that people spend daily on social networks and microblogs exceeds that of 2 hours. Use of Internet is not only for leisure, but also to tap into information. Facing this technological evolution, customs and habits, and even the Church – called from its beginning to proclaim the Good News everywhere and always, whatever the circumstances and means available – must ask not only about what is the best way to live in this new world, but also how to influence it positively. This contribution, meant to be explorative but certainly not exhaustive, seeks to offer food for thought in order to respond to these needs. After having painted the media landscape that we find ourselves viewing, verifying the informative nature of the Church and recalling her essential evangelical mission, we will affirm some possible proposals for “citizenship” in new media. Such proposals are made in light of the Magisterium with particular reference to Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium.
