Summary/Abstract: Joseph Ratzinger argues that music has a significant place in the liturgy of the Church, and thus in the profession of faith. He describes the liturgy using, above all, the term of transition: highlighting a continual re-presentation of the cosmic event of the Passover of the Lord and the personal self-transition, which influences lives of the participants. Singing and music are central axis of the process mentioned and as essential elements of the creed have accompanied the Community of Christ`s disciples since the synagogue period. To date, the Psalms are a reference point for the content and form of liturgical music, although over the centuries that area of church activity has been affected by various negative factors. Pope Emeritus, discussing contemporary problems in this case, presents two extreme approaches: he calls them the puritanical functionalism and the functionalism of adjustment. From the historical point of view they have their roots in the times of the Church Fathers. The only way to solve that kind of polarization is to apply a well interpreted dogma of Chalcedon to liturgical music. Finally, its aim is to worship God through the dialogue of love with the Holy Spirit.
