Summary/Abstract: This paper collects scattered pieces of witty advice from Francis Bacon’s essays in orderto construct a coherent profile of the social winner in 16th century England against thegeneral Renaissance background. It revolves around the key virtues of truth, honour andwisdom, and especially juxtaposes them with the craft of dissimulation, thus highlightingand analysing the required combination of skills essential for achieving honour andpower in Bacon’s world
