The phenomenon of virtual currencies – opportunities and threats for international finances

Summary/Abstract: Cryptocurrencies have been common interest for several years. The source of popularity of virtual currencies is not only the effect of technological novelty, but also the desire to get rich quickly. According to the authors, virtual currencies have limited usefulness and pose a serious threat to both individual users and financial institutions. To bring tangible benefits of the new considerations for the financial world, it is necessary to educate users of cryptocurrencies, adopt appropriate regulations and supervise their turnover. Critical assessment of cryptocurrencies does not mean, however, negating the need to develop blockchain technology that is useful in data processing.
