Summary/Abstract: The article traces the historical development of acrostic and discusses some of its main functions. It emphasizes the fact that acrostic is a multi-functional linguistic phenomenon. It is a secret code, a method of teaching and deciphering literature, a list of authors' names, a list of significant existential themes and ideas, orchestrating instrument, musical, graphic and thematic verbal memory. The acrostic could be accompanied by other with wordplay constructs and word-constructing and deciphering techniques - anagram, palindrome, pangrams. The analysis is based on examples of medieval texts and authors, as well as contemporary sources.
