Summary/Abstract: The present text proposes a psychological review of the most important empirical studiesthat have been carried out over time on prayer. Due to the lack of full consensus among psychologistswith regards to prayer, the first section of the text puts forward some arguments in favour of thescientific research of prayer. Secondly, a revision of the studies exploring how prayer is understoodand practiced at different ages, namely children, adolescents, and adults. Thirdly, various types of prayer are examined, as well as their use in scientific research. Furthermore, various psychologicaland social aspects associated with praying and a wide range of randomized double‑blind clinical trials on the effects of intercession prayer are presented. Finally, recent neuroscientific studies inthis field are reviewed.
