Summary/Abstract: The author of the paper tries to perceive theoretical thought of Jovan Skerliã and his views concerning literary history and historical change in the perspective of the solutions stem from different European theories from 19th and especially from 20th century. Presenting Jovan Skerliã as the first modern literary historian in Serbian literature, the author tries to show which ideas had helped him to build his masterpiece work — The History of Modern Serbian Literature (1914) as well as to point out especially his conception of change which she recognizes also in the theories of Heinrich Wölflin, Viktor Šklovski, Hans Robert Jaus and Stanley Fish.
