Summary/Abstract: As the title implies, the article describes the influence of church and cultural-religious institutions on the development of the literary language on the territory of historical Transcarpathia in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The main attention is paid to the activities of Greek-Catholic clergy. In the absence of any Ukrainian state institutions, regional clergy actually performed their functions. Also, clergy was the only bulwark of Ukrainians by means of which the language of the local population has survived to this day. In the article also political and legislative activities are mentioned, as well as the role of press and the state of school education.
