Summary/Abstract: The economic changes in the country since the late 1980s resulted in the increase of regional disproportions. There has been clear differentiation in regions and economic sectors which are leading ones in an economic aspect and such which are significantly lagging behind. One of the paramount indices regarding the extent of the regional and branch development is the level of costs intended for funding research and development. The focus of this study is the disproportions on a regional and branch level and the place Bulgaria occupies in the European innovations map in the context of the necessity of increasing the overall competitive power of Bulgarian economy
