The Known and Unknown Letters of Konrad Swinarski

Summary/Abstract: The article quotes Konrad Swinarski’s recently found letters, given by doctor Peter Seyffert, cousin of the outstanding director. Still relatively unknown, partially discovered biographical themes become, for Beata Guczalska, the most important elements that enrich our knowledge about the artist’s restless life. Swinarski’s correspondence with his Berlin relatives from 1944‑1974 touches upon subjects most incumbent on the director: national affiliation and sexual orientation. The author also draws attention to his writing’s self‑censorship, intertwining his private threads and theater career, while confronting the content of those correspondences from the point of view of the artist’s wife, Barbara Swinarska.
