Summary/Abstract: The Black Sea region has gone through a multitude of turbulent periods: wars, border reviews, ethnic conflicts, political and economic crises, and "colorful" revolutions. These events have always been initiated at the local level, but the great powers have maintained their important role throughout them. Romania's and Bulgaria's accession to NATO and the European Union, as well as the start of negotiations with Turkey on EU membership, however, fundamentally change geopolitics in the Black Sea region.Any conflict in the region, no matter what the cause, contains elements of geopolitical competition, whether it is the complex effects of the confrontations in Georgia and Ukraine, or the struggles between different political parties and politicians in any country.Sometimes the conflict is reduced to the simplistic idea of a collision between "pro-West" and "anti-West" or "pro-Russian" and "anti-Russian" forces. The reality, however, overcame these unhappy dichotomies long ago.
