Summary/Abstract: One of the most widespread myths is that we find ourselves in the middle of a "drug outbreak". Illicit drug production and trafficking is one of the most active forms of transnational organized crime. The profits generated by this illicit activity, which far exceeds some legitimate businesses, have led, besides traditional mafia organizations, to the appearance of tens and hundreds of criminal groups that put their production and drug trafficking at the forefront of their concerns. Concerned is the fact that in some countries these activities take place under the lenient perceptions of the authorities, in which criminal organizations have thousands of hectares of arable land for opium plant crops employed for the entire drug production process, protection groups, chemists, informatics, economics and finance, and all logistics specialists, including mini-submarines and helicopters needed to carry out their criminal activities.
