Summary/Abstract: The concept of socialist democracy became a crucial element of debates concerning the possibilities to rejuvenate socialism in Eastern Europe and (for the contemporary left at least) also in Western Europe. Socialist democracy was expected to create a better, more progressive alternative to Western, allegedly capitalist democracy. This study explores the content of the appeal of socialist democracy and the factors of the subsequent disappoint based on the cases of the autonomy movement of the Budapest University Faculty of Arts students and the Lukács-school. The program of alternative democracy, which was never really more than an illusion, played a crucial role in generating dissenting cultural and political identities set against official socialism and, therefore, it contributed also to the dismantling of these systems.
