Summary/Abstract: Business environment institutions, which mostly offer support in the area of: the financing of start-ups and business development, the provision of specialised business support advisory services, information services and training, as well as assistance in cooperation with other companies, play an important role in stimulating the development of small and medium-sized enterprises. According to numerous studies carried out in Poland, entrepreneurs recognise the benefits of cooperation with business environment institutions. However, the use of these institutions’ potential is limited by many barriers both on the part of enterprises, such as insufficient financial resources for project co-financing or insufficient knowledge of the possibilities of cooperation, and on the part of business environment institutions, such as the lack of professionalization of the provided services, insufficient information and promotional activities, and the lack of adaptation of the offer to the needs of enterprises. The aim of the paper is the assessment of suitability of business environment institutions’ offer for the development needs of small and medium-sized enterprises on the basis of opinions of entrepreneurs from the Lodz Region. The first part of the paper presents the characteristics of the potential of business environment institutions in Poland, with a special focus on the Lodz Voivodship, on the basis of a literature review and existing studies, while the second part presents the author’s own research conducted among small and medium enterprises.
