Keywords: The Short Chronicle; King Simeon’s historical collection

Summary/Abstract: The study examines The Short Chronicle, which is placed in the end of the Archival transcript of King Simeon’s historical collection dating from the year 921-922. Parallels with other short chronicles are indicated as well as with the proto-Bulgarian chronicle traditions. It is shown from which Byzantine translation chronics the compiler of The Short Chronicle has been borrowing passages. The work emphasizes his pro-Roman orientation which is explained by the intention of the Bulgarian ruler Simeon to obtain an emperor’s crown from the Pope. Another feature of The Short Chronicle is that neither individuals nor events from Bulgaria are mentioned in it.
