Summary/Abstract: The presented paper examines the two basic ways to express definiteness in the Slavonic translation of the Pandects of Antiochus: by means of a postpositive demonstrative pronoun (тъ or сь), or using the pronoun иже. In comparison with сь, the pronoun тъ has a more markedly expressed anaphoric function, and although their number is limited, some of the constructions using тъ come close to the notion of “article-like forms”. These two basic means of expressing definiteness – the postpositive demonstrative pronouns and the “article type” иже – do not compete, since the preconditions for their occurrence differ. The demonstrative pronouns are applied with independent names or in name groups that include attributes showing agreement or genitive forms, while the pronoun иже is used in prepositional phrases where it is practically impossible to use a postpositive pronoun as an equivalent of the Greek definite article or in significantly more complex phrases
