Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present the results of empirical research on social determinants of employees’ behaviour in the case of sickness. An analysis of the autobiographical stories about perceived or observed problems related to sickness absence was conducted. The determinants of this kind of absence behaviour was divided into two groups: related to actions taken by employers and internal beliefs of employees. Depending on the social relations and physical working conditions in a given organization, the interpretation of the concept of a sick employee and the behaviour expected from him in the case of illness is different.
