Old Age as a Resource: Formulating Elderly-Oriented Sciences

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to present the origin and functioning of scientific disciplines placing old age, growing old and the elderly in the central field of study. If a constructivist perspective according to which science is one of the possible variants of human practice is accepted, it will become possible to show in which way these practices played a part in the total process of constructing old age a social problem, but also to which extent old age was a resource for geriatrics that would stem from medicine, and then for gerontology as an umbrella science to include geriatrics as well, but also for social gerontology as the „youngest” among the „youngest” sciences of the indicated orientation. The analysis was approached in line with the chronological order in formulating the mentioned scientific disciplines.
