Summary/Abstract: The paper shares personal insights into two field practices in the Balkans, organised by the Marie Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland for students of various MA programs in 2013 and 2014. The author’s role as the planner and supervisor of these practices was complicated by his background from the region, whereas the participants (over 60 students for the two expeditions) were coming exclusively from Central and Eastern Europe and did not possess extensive knowledge or experience of the Peninsula. The paper reveals several key points in presenting the historical and cultural heritage of the Balkans, such as the strategies of approaching the process of europeisation of the Balkan countries, the ancient or Ottoman heritage, as well as the national liberation movements.
