Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the genre of posthumous memories on the basis of texts from the 19th century. The author critically presents the state of research, showing that studies within cultural linguistics devoted to obituaries do not sufficiently account for the evolution of statements published in the press after the death of a given person. In the first half of the 19th century, the concepts of obituary and posthumous memories were considered to be synonymous. The convention of posthumous memories was influenced by praise, and starting from the second half of that century, this convention additionally took on the characteristics of a genre of academic biography, which presented the life of a particular person as a fulfilment of the model of public and work service. Memories used to have the volume of a booklet or book and were literary portraits. The originally personal forms of remembrance about the deceased were replaced by the study of sources and documents. Private memories turned into professional biographies of public figures.
